This depends on each brand. Popular brands like BigMax can manufacture cranes that can last up to fifteen years.
The Test Process
How do they know? Prior to production, 2 test cranes of each BIGMAX model are put through rigorous testing, non-stop 24/7 for the equivalent use of 15 years. If any component should fail during the test period, it is redesigned and the test gets restarted. The testing continues until each model has been run for the full test period without failure.

Pro Desks recently announced the new Laptop Truck Desk for the 2015 Ford Super Duty series, F 250 through the F 750 trucks. This new laptop mounting system works extremely well for all types of construction applications such as the crane equipped trucks. There are very few laptop mounts that are as strong and rugged as the Pro Desk Models and most don’t work on the job site due to light duty. The Pro Desk models are all heavy duty units designed for oil field, and rugged use situations. Drop by the Pro Desks website and check them out.
Are you looking for a heavy duty compact crane to use for materials handling equipment that can be mounted on service trucks or loading docks? A BIGMAX knuckle boom crane is suitable for a pickup truck, flat deck truck, utility trailer or mounted to a service dock. These compact BIGMAX cranes are less than 10 ton meters with a lift moment under 72,000 ft.lbs and they are now available on-line on a wholesale basis.
Small Crane for Trailer used as Materials Handling Equipment
75% of the hydraulic cranes sold by crane companies in North America are smaller sized cranes which lend themselves to on-line purchasing for several reasons. These articulating truck cranes are less complex, have fewer options and are easier to install than a larger capacity truck crane which is more job specific and requires more specialized chassis and options.
As one of the most highly regarded crane manufacturers, BIGMAX provides a 2 year warranty with all their electric or hydraulic cranes along with detailed installation instructions.
For a limited time period, freight will be pre-paid to any destination in the United States or Canada. Call Sales Manager Don Rice toll free at 1-877-531-8644 for a quote on available cranes for sale or for additional information!
In the USA and Canada, Drive Products was instrumental in developing and establishing the small crane market.
Initially, the main deficiency of Maxi-lift cranes was the vulnerable and poorly protected rotation system, which is most profound in the 160 size as well as in the smaller versions. Instead of being enclosed and protected from the elements, the slewing gear mechanism is only shielded by a fragile plastic cover that regularly broke in transit from the manufacturer in Europe.
Eventually, an effort was made in the larger MaxiLift models to enclose the slewing gears by protecting them from the side, inside a fabricated steel vertical pipe, with a rubber cover that was loose on the outside. However, this design allowed the outside of the rubber hat to lift at normal road speeds of the crane truck which created an opening where sand, salt and other road debris could enter and cause the slewing system to fail prematurely. This very same design, probably because of its low cost, is still used by Maxilift on their truck crane today.
To solve this problem, all BIGMAX cranes are built with steel slewing gear enclosures – fabricated steel for the TC-100 version, and cast steel in all other TC models with the gears running in an oil bath. This design has proven to be much more reliable and long lasting which enables Drive Products to offer every crane for sale with a 2 year warranty.

Small crane trucks (with a lift capability of 5,000 lbs or less) are available in two designs. The first is a fixed boom (davit type) crane. The second is a crane with an elevating (articulated) arm. On a fixed boom crane, a winch is usually employed to do the lifting. The modern alternative is a crane with a pivoting (articulated) arm that lifts on the hook attached to its outer end.
Either type can be installed on service trucks such as flat decks, tire service, propane delivery and larger pick-up trucks.
Most operators consider an articulated crane the simpler of the two types to operate because he/she needs to focus on the movement of the boom tip hook and load movement. The operator of a winch equipped crane on the other hand, must pay attention to the winding of the winch line onto the drum as well as its movement through any sheaves.
An advantage of winch equipped cranes is that they can lift in a straight line, close to the column, while cranes with articulated booms lift through an arc of varying distance from the column.
However, because BIGMAX cranes feature booms that extend (telescope) as well as elevate hydraulically, they offer most of the advantages of winch equipped truck cranes without their operating complexities and extra costs.

Important to know when searching for a truck with crane is understanding the lift capability.
The term ‘lift moment’ is the load capacity of the knuckle boom crane in either tonne-metres (t/m) or foot-pounds (ft.lbs.). For example, if you need a truck crane to lift 2000 lbs. at a distance of 10 feet, then your crane must be rated at (or have a lift moment of) 2000 lbs @10 feet, or 20,000 foot-pounds.
BIGMAX TC mono-boom cranes are compact to install with a telescoping boom. The lift moment for the smallest TC 100 crane is 6,710 ft. lbs. This crane can lift 1,890 lbs and its maximum reach is 12 feet. The largest TC 350 crane has a lift moment of 24,900 with a maximum reach of 23 feet and a maximum lift of 5,297 lbs.
They have a large selection of compact and versatile truck cranes that start in the lift range of 1800 lbs and go up from there. The BIGMAX TC Series telescopic truck cranes, flat bed cranes, and small truck cranes are excellent choices to have a look at.
BIGMAX cranes can be PTO (power take-off) or battery operated hydraulic cranes that use regular hose fittings, and are constructed with high quality steel.
