How Long Can A Knuckle Boom Crane Last?

What is the estimated life span of a compact stiff boom crane?

This depends on each brand. Popular brands like BigMax can manufacture cranes that can last up to fifteen years.

The Test Process

How do they know? Prior to production, 2 test cranes of each BIGMAX model are put through rigorous testing, non-stop 24/7 for the equivalent use of 15 years.  If any component should fail during the test period, it is redesigned and the test gets restarted. The testing continues until each model has been run for the full test period without failure.

Bigmax TC100 Truck Mounted Cranes for Sale

About The TC100 Compact Hydraulic Crane

BigMax is a popular brand in crane industry. TC100 is the smallest among the line of compact hydraulic cranes. The TC100 crane has proportional controls for all functions including lifting, slewing, and extending.

There is also one extra fourth control function which can be used for hydraulic outrigger stabilizers,  winches, etc.

How TC100 Compact Hydraulic Crane Works

The TC100 stows completely in just over two square feet of deck area making it one of the best features of its compact design.  The boom, which extends to 9.2 ft from the center line of rotation, retracts to only 3.9 ft. and can lift 1,760 lbs at this point.

With the small footprint of this crane, it makes it possible to mount inside the doorway of a van to swing a load in or out.  With the boom in a horizontal position, the TC-100 will also lift in an overhead space of only 5.5 feet above the surface of the deck.

What is meant by crane ‘Lift Moment’?

Important to know when searching for a truck with crane is understanding the lift capability.

The term ‘lift moment’ is the load capacity of the knuckle boom crane in either tonne-metres (t/m) or foot-pounds (ft.lbs.). For example, if you need a truck crane to lift 2000 lbs. at a distance of 10 feet, then your crane must be rated at (or have a lift moment of) 2000 lbs @10 feet, or 20,000 foot-pounds.

BIGMAX TC mono-boom cranes are compact to install with a telescoping boom. The lift moment for the smallest TC 100 crane is 6,710 ft. lbs. This crane can lift 1,890 lbs and its maximum reach is 12 feet.  The largest TC 350 crane has a lift moment of 24,900 with a maximum reach of 23 feet and a maximum lift of 5,297 lbs.

Advantages and disadvantages of DC electric powered small booms

The main advantage of a DC powered crane over a hydraulic crane on a boom truck is ease of installation. For example, since BIGMAX electric cranes come with their own battery operated power pack, the crane can be mounted on any vehicle including trucks, trailers, and boats which has an adequate battery and sufficient stability. No separate, often costly hydraulic system is required as on a hydraulic crane.

The main disadvantage of DC powered cranes on boom trucks is that, because it is battery operated, the crane has a limited duty cycle. While ideal for more occasional use, a battery powered crane can usually run for 5 minutes every 20 minutes or so, depending on the battery strength and whether the battery is being constantly charged.

How To Choose A Small Truck Crane

Are you looking for a small truck crane? Here is some basic information. Small truck cranes generally can lift up to 5,000 lbs. This is referred to as a lift capacity of 5,000 lbs. with a lift moment of 25,000 ft. lbs or 3.5 t/m. Small articulating cranes are often matched with trucks under 15,000# GVW  such as the Ford 550. If you are in the market for a small truck with crane, you would likely be using the crane intermittently. In this case, the crane would be powered by the truck battery.

Drive Products is a leader among small crane companies and BIGMAX cranes are one of the best small cranes in the marketplace.  They come in a range of types and styles including knuckle boom cranes and telescopic cranes.
